The predecessor of the town was the watch castle in the present-day Starý Plzenec. At the end of the 13th century, at the not far confluence of four rivers, founded was the new royal town the historic core of which has respected the Gothic town-planning plan till today. The most valuable monuments include the Renaissance town hall, the cathedral of St. Bartoloměj, historic underground and the Large Synagogue.
The system of two- to three-storeyed cellars that is situated under the whole centre of the town Plzeň originated gradually from the 13th to the 19th centuries. By the total length of corridors of ca 17 km it belongs among the most extensive ones in central Europe. The sightseeing route begins at Perlová Street, is approximately 750 m long and leads 9-12 m under the surface.
The oldest museum of its kind in the world has its seat in the original mediaeval brewing-right house with Gothic malt house and its exposition tells the story of beer from the primeval times up to the origin of the large industrial breweries. A part of the museum is also the taproom Na Parkánu.
